About Anna Jarvis
Anna Jarvis (1864–1948) organized the first Mother's Day observances in 1908 in Grafton, West Virginia, and Philadelphia, honoring her late mother's activism. President Wilson made it a national holiday in 1914.
Jarvis then spent her fortune fighting the holiday's commercialization — the founder who came to oppose what her creation became, one of the great ironies in holiday history.
