Rosa Parks (1913–2005) was a trained NAACP activist whose refusal to surrender her bus seat in Montgomery, Alabama, on 1 December 1955 launched the Montgomery bus boycott — a 381-day campaign that ended segregation on the city's buses by Supreme Court ruling.
Far from the 'tired seamstress' of legend, Parks was an experienced organizer and her arrest was a planned test case. The boycott made Martin Luther King Jr. a national figure and proved organized economic pressure could defeat segregation.
